Sometimes the hardest things
are really simple.
I was feeling a little blah creativetly. Besides the grandma on bikes piece, I didn't feel like I was creating anything that I loved with a capital L.
So, Thursday night I sat down with the ole sketchbook. I doodled here and there, trying noses, this and that. I drew a wavy line across the middle of the page and decided I wanted to try a composition based on a diagonal line. I quickly got the body shape, decided I should let loose with the hair and then decided I wanted to add a pattern to her dress.
Holy cow, pattern. I love pattern in other people's work but have always felt stumped. Then a little bulb lit up and I realized I could create my own pattern. Once I started, I went wild. It makes since, my journal is filled with intricate doodle patterns. Why in the world was I not incorparating these into my illos earlier? I think that we lock ourselves in these little boxes of style and habit and forget that there is no lid.
So, I drew it in an hour or so. Woke up the next morning, realized I could put this up for the Illustration Friday topic of "Fat" and was number 0 on the list. Then, the entire site was updated and I was lost amoung the masses again.
Oh well. At least I feel inspired again. Here is the piece in full color.
I'll have info on the Mid-Atlantic Illustrator conference posted soon.

Fabulous work!
What a fun piece Courtney! I love the strong colors and the big size contrast of the two characters.

The colors are great and so is your free flowing approach. I'll have to try that!!

Little girl is almost lost in that fat pattern....heheh!
Great!
She's great Courtney. I'm so glad you've added your own pattern into her dress. It's definitely quirky-like you! (I think you're getting better and better at hair, by the way!)
love the pattern brightly coloured hair. You should repost on I-F with a thumbnail!
Woah COurtney! You've definetly hit a vein here.....you've got a gift with patterns. I never would have imagined you were stumped with patterns with your style.
Keep using patterns...it's so YOU!
I love this piece. Keep it up.
