Favorites Filler
Fuzzy Kittens and Raindrops are nice but...
I received one of my favorite things in the mail today. Samurai Jack, season 2 and season 3. The hubby buys these for me and I have to tell you the arrival of the UPS truck makes me giddy all day. (which he usually does)
I love that show. I was depressed for at least a week when I found out that one of the most beautiful, funny and action packed cartoons (strictly for grown-ups, no need to teach the pud martial arts just yet) was cancelled. Now, I can stare in awe at beautiful washed and linear backgrounds, awesome character design and a great story.
Another thing that brings joy to this household is Laurie Berkner. We first discovered her on Noggin's Jack's Big Music Show and the pud jammed to her beats - while I didn't feel the need to break the TV afterwards. I bought her dvd/cd set the other day and it makes the pud hysterically happy. When she sees the case, she goes monkey crazy and runs around the room asking for "Bkna, Bkna". She dances to all of the songs and knows most of the words. The songs are in my head all day and it's actually something I can live with. My only complaint is that the cd only comes with 5 songs and we could use much, much more on long car rides.
Speaking of Noggin, I have to give credit to them for Jack's Big Music Show. I love the music, the snappy dialogue, the writing and the character design. The kiddie music they feature is usually really good stuff and it actually fosters an appreciation for music in the wee one. My problem with this one is that there are only 11 episodes. Please, please give me more.
Another show for the Pud that I love is Charlie and Lola. To be honest, Playhouse Disney is over produced in my opinion. Every show is tweaked until all of the charm and originality has been drained out into a little bowl that they then put back into the blender. But this show, this is a wonderful, fun show. After seeing one I went to the library and checked out a few books. Lauren Child, you are my idol. I have fallen in love with everyone of her books I have found so far with or without the sibling duo. I bow to your stories, collage, characters, colors, patterns, stories and awesome way with text.
Switching gears just a bit, I love Hayao Miyazaki films. I first fell in love with his work in Spirited Away but also liked Castle in the Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service. My absolute favorite is Howl's Moving Castle. I'm sure you can guess why. Beautiful Animation and scenery, spectacular details and lighting. But the best part can be summed up in two words, fiesty grandma.

My son, Josh (10), and I also enjoy Hayao Miyazaki films.
Noone else in the house is really a fan, so it's something just the two of us do together. They all wonder what we are talking about when we say "What a pretty fire".
I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE Samurai Jack and was also really sad when they cancelled it. I had no idea it's out on DVD now. I'll really have to look into that.
I'm also a huge fan of Miyazaki. Howl's Moving Castle is AMAZING.
You've got great taste in toons ;)
