New York
Here I come.
We are going next week. Mainly to see family(especially the cutest 19 month old baby I know) and a bit to see the sights.
One of the things that I am determined to do is Portfolio Drop-offs!
That's right I am forcing a few (lucky) ADs to look through my work. I am a little nervous, a little excited and not sure exactly how I should do this. I am thinking of preparing a feedback sheet to go in the portfolio so I am more likely to get something back.
Has anyone out there done this? Any recommendations, advice, tips?

Hi Courtney, I used to go to the NYC area a few years ago.... well, more than a few. I had the choice of going on a Wednesday when a lot of houses had open portfolio days, and anyone who wanted to wait could walk in with work in hand. Some pubs still might have a portfolio day. And I could always drop off a portfolio to pick up later in the day. Then I would go off to the Museum of Natural History and sketch for most of the day and finally pick up my stuff and head home on the bus. These days it is wise to call ahead and see what the publishers will allow or accomodate. It is an interesting experience and lots of great feedback will be coming your way I am sure.
thanks ginger :)
i found this site that gives times and phone numbers of publishers that accept portfolio drop-offs. i have confirmed 2 drop-offs so far. so excited and a little terrified...
Courtney,
Here's a non art tip.
Go to China Town, find Mott Street, find Wo Hops. Eat there.
Make sure you go downstairs. It's a hole in the wall but it is the best chinese food in NYC. Trust me you won't be disappointed.

I haven't done this, but I'm curious how your experience turned out.
Good luck with the portfolio dropoff, hope it yields lots of fruit. And have a fabulous time in New York, I'm so jealous.
I'm loving the alphabet drawings, the captions are so much fun, they put a big smile on my face. Are you going to sell them in a book?
Love your alphabet so far. Great idea!
Good luck in the big city.
Excuse me for my ignorance, but what is the meaning of "portfolio dropoff".
Thanks,
Cata.
oh i love all the new sketches you have!!! gonna have a wonderful book by the time you are done!!!
for portfolio drop off, the main thing i suggest is having something that STANDS OUT! or like a promo that they can keep and use... be it a magnet with your art, a greeting card made to them, SOMETHING that they can USE so that everytime they use it, they will be looking at YOUR work and reminded of it :
you know, you make such wonderful illustrations of grandmas, i would suggest going to the nursing homes and seeing if you can display/sell your artwork there... i mean, if you do prints, it can be affordable for them and the family! there is one by me that will display art and if you were interested, i could give you the info :)
hugs!
Hi Courtney,
Wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing the site that gives publishers names and phone numbers of publishers that accept portfolio drop-offs? I am in NYC doing the same thing right now. Hope things are going or went well for you!
Kelly
Thanks for the advice and well wishes guys!
Carta and Kelly- the decription of a portfolio drop-off and the link to the site are in my most recent post, Droppin' it. :)
