To answer a question

Roz had asked me (in a previous comment) what piece of advice from the art directors really "spoke" to me. I sat on the answer for a few days, because, let's be honest here, my ego was a bit bruised. How to pick just one thing? But as I was thinking of a new piece to create, I realized the biggest thing I need to work on is a sense of narrative. In my current wip, I had thought about drawing a queen. I let it bounce around my head a few days then thought, how about a queen on a couch? That's kind of funny. That is where I usually start drawing on the watercolor paper (no tracing for me, although i think I should). But I thought about it a bit more. What would make it more of a story? I tend to go with words, emotions and feelings. One of my issues is to spread them into paragraphs, with people wondering what is going to happen next instead of just stopping at this image. So I thought about what the queens would be waiting for and here is my other major issues, where are they waiting? Joann Hill from Clarion pointed out that I should give more hints about the characters from their settings. It doesn't have to be a complicated setting just a few clues here and there.

So.. I don't know if I have accomplished that in my latest piece in progress but I am thinking of these things while I am working, so that is a start. You all can tell me,which might be a bit confusing as it is half finished) Do you want to know what is happening here or what will happen next?

(I am also planning on leaving white space so that it's not such a corneal blast to look at my paintings, I got the words over-saturation a lot)

Oh I really like where this one is going! The expressions on the queen's faces is amazing, and very intriguing. I definitely want to turn the page to see more. The chair in the corner really catches my eye as well. I'm really liking the white space, it loosens everything up in a really great way. :)

What about the queen waiting for someone who can give her information on the whereabouts on the king who has gone missing? Maybe his doctor? He can't help her though and she ends up having to run the kingdom which she always thought she could do really well but which she finds really difficult. Then the king comes back from the fishing trip he went on and they live happily ever after.

Just an idea to while away my rainy afternoon. Good luck with the book, hope it goes well.
